There are many and different opinions about the origin of Pegeia's name. However, the most prevalent is that of Nearxos Klirides. According to him, the name is foreign and shows that the settlement was built in the years of the Venetians, who called the neighbouring port B(a)ia and named the small cape found there Cheratidi, because it looked like a horn (the Greek word for which is Cherato). Baia Cheratidi means Cheratidi Bay, and that is how the settlement got its name. Baia in Italian means ‘Bay’, and that is where the name Pegeia came from (the two words Baia and Pegeia have the same intonation and pronunciation).
