The Municipality of Pegeia is particularly sensitive to hygiene and health matters.
Refuse collection
The refuse collection is done by Municipality-owned vehicles, in the early hours of the morning. It is done twice a week in residential areas and between twice and five times a week in commercial and tourist areas, depending on requirements.
Refuse and bin disposal methods
• Houses:
Refuse must be left in the specifically built bins or in plastic bins that are hermetically sealed. These must be moved to the front yard after collection. It must be stressed that, in both cases, refuse must first be placed in plastic bags that have been tied up well.
It is forbidden:
- To leave bags containing refuse outside the bins, or leave the bins on the pavement or in other open spaces.
-To permanently leave any type of refuse bin on the pavement or anywhere else other than the owner’s front yard.
Residents are advised to take their refuse out late at night, the day before it is due to be collected.
• Apartment blocks/hotels/restaurants
Refuse must be placed in large wheelie bins with a capacity to hold 1100 litres, which must be kept in the property’s front yard. The purchase, maintenance and washing of these bins are the sole responsibility of the property’s landlord/tenant. In certain cases, the purchase of a special refuse compressor is advisable. It should be noted that the refuse collection is for household refuse only. Garden waste, large items, wood, stone, iron, sand etc. should not be placed in the refuse bins. The Municipality of Pegeia has arranged for a circulating crew to collect oversize refuse.
• Dogs
Dog owners are required to purchase a licence from the Municipality. In Cyprus dogs are forbidden on beaches, except in specially designated areas. There is also a law against the fouling of public areas by dogs, punishable by a fine to the owner.
