The Union of Cyprus Municipalities was founded in 1981. Although membership is optional, all 33 Municipalities, which cover 65% of the population of Cyprus, are members of the Union. The Union’s main aim is to contribute to the autonomy of local governments and to defend the interests of local government on a Government level, and where other public platforms and organisations are concerned. It also plays an active part in the ongoing relations between Cyprus and the European Union.
The General Assembly is at the head of the Union, and can deal with and make decisions on all matters. The Executive Committee implements decisions taken directly by the General Assembly. The Union President represents the Union before any authority, while the Secretary is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Union. The President of the Union is the Mayor of Limassol, Mr Andreas Christou, and the Secretary is Mr Athos Germanos..
The Union is a member of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) and is part of the Local Governments Network (LOGON), which is funded, essentially, by the European Union (INTERREG III C). It is also represented in the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe (CLRAE), and the European Union’s Committee of the Regions..
